예전에 몸이 안 좋아서 병원에 있을 때였다. 병원에 독극물을 먹고 자살 시도를 하고 실려온 여자분이 있었다. 보호자가 아무도 없었던 그분은, 깨어나고 나서 소리쳤다. 전 살 수도 죽을 수도 없나요? 복합부위통증증후군으로 매일 밤 잠을 자지 못하고 바람만 스쳐도 고통스러워 하는 사람도 있었다. 부모님께서 암 투병을 하셔서 봤던 암병동에 계시던 분들 중 잠을 제대로 자는 분들은 거의 없었다. 항암제 때문에 머리가 한움큼씩 빠져나가고 물만 먹으면 구토했다. 며칠째 심한 불면증에 시달리던 나는, 온몸에 벌레가 기어다니고 환청이 들리는 듯한 기분에 사로잡혔다. 몸이 아파서 혼자 있고 싶어도, 신음과 소음에 1인실에 좀 있고 싶어도 뭘 하나 먹고 싶어도 영양주사를 맞고 싶어도 모든게 다 돈이었다. 몸은 휘청거리는데 택시비가 없어서 지하철과 버스를 타고 가려면 몇 번이고 바닥에 주저앉아야 했다. 주위 사람들한테 도와달라고 해도, 나도 여유가 없고 내가 왜 너를 도와야 하냐는 차가운 거절뿐이었다. 우리는 그 사람들에게 어떻게든 괴로운 그 날들을 연장해야 한다고, 삶은 소중하다고 말하는 것이 의미가 있는 것일까. 애시당초 삶의 의미란 자기 자신이 찾는 건데, 남들이 와서 인생은 살만한 거예요, 하고 말하는 것을 들을때 어떤 느낌이 들까. 고통받는 사람들 중 삶의 의지를 불태우는 사람들은 그들의 의지를 존중하고 박수를 쳐줘야겠지만, 그렇지 않은 사람에게 우리는 선택의 기회를 줘야 하지 않을까? 우리는 그저 사람들에게 태어나서 살아가라고만 한다. '어떻게' 살아가는지는 그건 내 알바 아니고니까. 어떤 식으로든 임신한 여자한테는 문란하게 놀면서 책임지지 못한 네 잘못이니 낳아서 키우라고 한다. 네 몸이지만 사회에서 정했으니 낙태는 불법이라 한다. 그러면 내 아이를 키워주냐에 대해선 아니란다. 모든 것은 개인의 책임이라면서. 살기 위해서는 돈이 필요하고, 먹을 것과 안정된 주거가 필요하고, 사람들로부터의 정신적인 지지와 고통받지 않는 신체가 필요하다. 그런 것들을 우리가 보기에 제대로 갖추지 못한 사람들에게 손가락질한다. 정말 우연히 단지 누구 자식으로 태어났기 때문에 다 가지고 태어났던 거면서, 억울하면 능력없고 돈없는 네 부모를 원망해야지 별수있겠니. 미혼모의 자식이라고, 장애인이라고, 나보다 돈이 없다고, 우리 집 옆에 낡은 임대아파트에 산다고 편을 나누고 무시하고 아무렇게나 대해도 된다고 생각한다. 내가 당하는 갑질은 화가 나면서, 나는 다른 사람에게 다시 갑질을 한다. 나보다 못난 사람한테는 그래도 되니까. 그러나 나 역시 뭐 하나라도 삐끗했으면 저 사람들과 같으리라고는 생각하지 않는다. 어차피 내 일 아니니까. 항상 삶과 죽음에 관해서 이야기 할때...개인적인 의견은 그렇습니다. 제가 사실 죽을뻔한적이 있거든요. 중학교때 물에 빠져서 죽을뻔한적이있습니다. 순간 죽기 억울해서 강에서 기어 나왔습니다. 그러니깐...음 숨은 쉴려고 하기때문에 코로 물이 그대로 들어오는걸 버티면서 기어나왔거든요. 강폭이 한 15미터 정도에 수심은 2~3미터였는데...음...뭐 그랬습니다. 그 이후로 어지간한것에 죽으려고 하지 않습니다. 삶에 대한 집착이 크다고 봐야죠. 고등학교때 1진들한데 다구리 당했을때도 뭐 별거 아니라고 생각했습니다. 제가 사실 무시하면 되... 더 보기
