탈북자들의 인터뷰내용 중에 흥미로운 부분이 있었어요. 인터뷰어가 탈북자에게 물었어요. 10분 54초입니다. [인터뷰어] : 북한 사람들은 전체적으로 스트레스를 많이 받는다고 생각하세요? 아니면 나름대로 삶에 만족하고 산다고 생각하세요? 얼마나 행복한가요? [탈북자]: 제 생각에는 아무리 힘들고 못 먹고 해도 사람들이 다 웃어요. 항상 웃으면서 살아요. [인터뷰어]: 많이 웃는다고요? [탈북자] : 네. 진짜 많이 웃어요. 왜냐면 이렇게 잘 살고 풍족한 나라일수록 스트레스가 더 많아지고, 왜냐면 생각할 게 많으니까. 북한 같은 경우에는 아무리 못살아도 서로 만나가지구 대화를 하면서 진짜 행복해요. 정말 행복해요. 모든 사람들이 다 행복하게 지내거든요. 이 대화 어떤 의미인지 알 것 같으시죠. 방글라데시 사람들의 행복지수가 높다더란 말과 일맥상통하기도 해요. 방글라데시 같은 후진국의 행복지수는 왜곡되어 있을지도 모른다고 알려져 있고 그 후 쏟아져 나온 행복에 관한 연구결과에서는 선진국 사람들의 행복지수가 훨씬 높다고 나와요. 그런데 나미비아의 시골거주자들, 도시거주자들, 영국의 거주민들 이렇게 세 그룹을 대상으로 행복지수를 조사한 결과, 나미비아 시골사람들의 삶에 대한 만족도가 도시사람들보다 유의미하게 높았고 나미비아의 시골/도시 두 거주자들의 만족도는 영국사람들보다 유의미하게 높았어요. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0191886916310492 이 연구는 2016년 10월 21일에 보고된 거네요. 북한 같이 제도적으로 인간의 피를 말리는 척박한 환경 속에서도 인간은 행복할 줄을 알아요. 탈북자의 음성을 직접 들어보시면 그녀가 묘사하는 북한 사람들의 행복이란 게 마치 환각 속의 희열같기도 합니다. 어쩌면 문명은 행복을 보장해 줄 수 없는 것일 뿐 아니라 진정한 행복은 문명과 어우러지기가 힘든 성질의 것인지도 모르겠어요. 왜 이런 논리가 가능하냐면, 탈북자들의 북한탈출기를 한 번쯤은 들어보셨을 거예요. 생사를 넘나드는 그들의 탈출기, 굶주림, 짐승같은 인간의 면면을 목격하는 것 등 분명 온갖 고행과 불행을 집약해서 인간의 한계를 시험하는 극한의 고통 뿐이에요. 그러나 탈출에 성공하고 난 후의 그들은 웃으면서 과거를 이야기합니다. 미국에서는 아프간, 이라크 등의 격전지에 참전했다가 심적 외상 후의 스트레스 장애에 시달리는 우울증 환자들이 많아요. 굳이 전쟁의 현장에 가 보지 않은 많은 현대문명인들도 각종 우울증을 달고 살죠. 북한에서 사람들을 행복하게 만든 건 뭐라고 생각하세요? 전 사람들 그 자체였다고 생각해요. 잃을 것이 없는 그들은 가진 거라곤 그들 자신밖에 없었어요. 그리고 그들끼리는 때로 많이 행복했대요. 서로 외로울 일은 없었죠. 문명 속의 인간은 자주 외로워요. 덴마크가 가장 행복한 나라라고 하지만 글쎄요. 결국, 행복이란 과연 무엇인가라는 질문에 대해 우리는 물질이 얼만큼 보장되어야 기본적으로 행복하다고 장담했다가 다시금 답이 궁색해져버린 느낌이에요.
