1. 학군단 과정을 모두 이수하고 병과가 나왔다. "수박이 장교님은 보병 병과로 편성 되었습니다." 뭐?? 보병이라고?? 1~3순위 안에 보병을 쓰지도 않았는데, 보병이라고? 문득 한 선배의 말이 떠올랐다. "문과는 뭘 해도 보병이야. 자격증을 따도 보병, 안 따도 보병. 그냥 넌 보병으로 간다고 생각해. 알겠니? 넌.보.병.이.야." 그 말이 현실이 되었다. 그 날 보병 병과로 편성된 친구들과 소주를 기울였다. 소주가 참 썼다. 2. 보병 병과로 편성이 된 후 자대 배치를 받는 날이었다. 훈육관이 단상에 올라 첫 단번부터 자대를 알려주기 시작했다. 전방으로 가는 동기는 탄식을, 수도군단 예하 사단으로 가는 동기는 환호를. 희비가 엇갈리는 순간이었다. 이제 내 자대를 알게 될 차례였다. 갑자기 훈육관이 단상에서 내려와 나에게로 다가와 손을 잡고 말했다. "수박이, 넌 내가 OBC (초군반) 로 군화 하나 보내줄게. 수박이는 XXX란다. 호옹이!! 엄청난 환호성과 박수. 동기들이 박수를 치며 소리쳤다. "ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ ㅋ" 그 날 저녁, 동기들과 소주를 기울였다. 서울에 있는 곳으로 배치 받은 동기는 웃으며 소주를 마셨다. 하지만 난 그렇지 못했다. ..강아지.. 그 날 소주는 정말 썼다. 3. OBC (초군반) 커리큘럼에 일주일간의 자대실습기간이 있었다. 초군반교육 과정에 왜 이런게 있는건데.. 살려줘. 결국 그 시간은 다가왔고 자대 전입 전 내가 있어야 할 곳으로 갔다. 맑은 공기. 밝게 웃어주며 환영하는 중대장, 선임소대장, 그리고 보급관. 소대 생활관으로 가서 아이들과 인사를 나눴다. 그 누구보다도 나를 좋아라 하는 척 했던 분대장. 어랍쇼, 생각보다 나쁘지는 않은데? 일주일이란 시간동안 선임소대장과 친해졌다. 선임소대장은 임관일이 나보다 반년 빠른 학사장교였다. 학사 출신 최초로 참모총장을 해보겠다는 부푼 꿈을 꾸고 있는 소년이었다. 그와 이런저런 이야기를 나눴고, OBC 교육을 마치면 자대에서 소주 한 잔 같이 하자는 약속을 하고 헤어졌다. OBC 교육을 마치고 4박 5일의 휴가를 받은 후 자대로 복귀했다. 그런데 그 선임소대장이 없다. 휴가를 갔나. 보급관에게 물어봤다. 안 좋은 일이 있어 잠시 휴가를 갔다라고 했다. 일 주, 이 주가 지나도 그는 돌아오지 않았다. 중대장에게 조심히 물어봤다. 그는 소대원과의 관계를 힘들어하다가 당직근무 중 소총을 휴대하고 근무지 이탈을 했다고 했다. 여단 창설 이래 처음 일어난 일이라고 했다. 이 사실이 세어나가지 못하게 상당한 노력을 한 것 같았다. 그는 정신 분열 판정을 받고 현재 수도병원에 입원중이며 조만간 전역을 할 것 같다라는 말을 했다. 그는 그렇게 결국 소위 전역을 했다. 대장의 꿈을 가지고 있던 당찬 선임소대장. 결국 그와 함께 한 시간은 일주일이 전부였다.
