https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trump-voters-will-not-like-what-happens-next/2016/11/09/e346ffc2-a67f-11e6-8fc0-7be8f848c492_story.html?tid=pm_pop_b#comments 워싱턴 포스트지 사설인데.. 글쓴이는 자신을 글자그대로 '리버럴 엘리티스트'라고 지칭하고 있고, 트럼프지지자들은 트럼프가 대통령이 될 것이란 기대도 없었으면서 욕설티셔츠를 입고 맥주캔 쥐고 부---거리다가 RV를 타고 나가 부엉이 사냥이나 하는 놈들로 묘사, 리버럴 엘리티스트인 자신과 같은 사람들은 도서관사서, 아동서적작가, 문법교정자들, 새를 사랑하는 사람들, 파스타를 요리해 먹고 오페라를 관람하러 가는 사람들, 요가를 하고 유일신을 믿는 등의 사람들로 묘사하고 있어요. 정부는 공화당 손에 넘어갔으니 리버럴들은 이제 앞으로 전개될 불행으로부터 온전히 혐의를 벗어나게 될 거다, 나는 나의 일상을 살테니 무식한 트럼프지지자들끼리 북치고 장구치고 잘 해봐라...라는 논조예요. 이거 번역 못해드려 죄송한데 관심있으신 분들은 읽어보세요. 댓글이 폭발했어요. 사라 페일린과 크리스 크리스티를 거느리고 있는 트럼프진영을 보면 이해가 안 가는 건 아니지만 민주당을 지지하는 엘리티시트들에 대한 반감으로 트럼프로 돌아선 사람들이 있단 얘길 저도 들었어요. 언젠가 길도현님께서도 정치적 올바름에 지나치게 매몰된 사회정의용사들에 대한 반발심이 트럼프를 지지하게 만들었다는 내용의 글을 올리신 바도 있고요. 저 글은, 역설적으로 리버럴 엘리티스트입장에서 정치적 올바름에 구애받지 않고 자기가 쏟아내고 싶은대로 여과없는 말을 던진 면에서는 트럼프 못지 않은 과감함을 보여줘요. 속이 시원한 화법은 당장은 사이다같이 들리지만 이런 화법이나 사고가 초래하는 역풍의 나비효과가 엄청나다는 걸 한국, 미국 모두 보여 주는 것 같아요. 저는 민주당성향이다보니 트럼프지지자들의 정서가 완벽하게 이해되는 건 아니지만 그네들의 머릿속을 상상해 보려는 시도는 할 수 있어요. 그리고 예전부터 인간의 속성 중 '도덕성에의 집착'에 굉장히 관심이 많았어요. 트럼프지지자들 중에 자신이 인종차별주의자라거나 성차별주의자라고 자처하는 사람들은 잘 없어요. 오히려 그런 비난을 듣고 공격을 퍼붓는 이들을 피곤한 사회정의용사들로 낙인찍고 적개심을 보여요. 그들의 적은 사회정의를 부르짖는 이들인데 사회정의의 반대편에서 비난의 화살을 받고 있는 이들은 악마의 화신이 아니라 감히 자신의 도덕심에 생채기를 내는 사회정의용사들을 용서하지 못하는 또 다른, 인간의 본성인 도덕성을 지키고자 하는 이들이에요. 쉬운 예가 바로 종교와 동성애논란이에요. 리버럴 입장에선 동성애자차별이 명명백백한 악이지만 종교인들에게는 오히려 동성애가 죄악이고 그들 자신은 죄를 멸하고 선을 지켜내야하는 전사들이죠. 이렇듯 인간은 도덕심에 생채기가 나는 것을 굉장히 견디기 어려워하는 것 같아요. 일베도 그렇게 혐오스런 언어들을 쏟아내면서 정작 그들은 오유의 '위선'이 싫다고 해요. 오유가 위선적이냐 아니냐를 차치하고 일베가 흔들리는 때가 바로 도덕심이 완전 부재한 패거리로 전락하는 때란 걸 알 수 있어요. 도덕따위 안중에 없는 진짜 악인들은 위선을 보고 동족임을 확인하고 즐거워하면 했지 치를 떨지는 않을 거예요. 트럼프지지자들과 일베를 같은 선상에 두고 드리는 말씀은 아니고 보편적으로 인간으로 하여금 주저없이 어떤 확고한 전선- 그 전선의 방향이 어떻든 - 으로 뛰어들게 만드는 최상의 촉매제는 인간 궁극의 본성인 도덕적이려는 욕망을 건드리는 거란 생각이 들어요. 인간이 과연 그렇게나 도덕적이길 원하는 선한 존재냐. 개인단위가 아닌, 인간이 도덕적이려고 하는 건 '선을 추구하는 순수한 본질'과는 멀어 보여요. 도덕적이려는 속성은 그 자체가 행복이고 마음의 안녕인 경우도 있겠지만 적지 않은 경우 결국 도태되지 않으려는 몸부림에 다를 바 없는 것 같아요. 리버럴진영은 도덕성에 있어서 스스로 우위를 점하고 있다는 자부심이 있는데 보수와 대결할 때 자신의 도덕심을 무기로 삼아요. 도덕이란 건 인류생존에 있어 막강한 힘을 자랑하는 요소이고 공공연하게 보수를 꼼짝못하게 하는 데 탁월한 효과가 있거든요. 도덕적이려는 속성이 이미 인간진화의 핵심인지 그렇지는 않아서 언젠가 멸족하고 말 우리인지는 저도 잘 모르겠지만 생존본능과 치열하게 맞닿아 있는 건 분명한 듯해요. 그치만 '선'은 오롯이 선이어야 하지 무기로 오용되는 순간 인간 스스로를 해치는 독이 되는 건가 봐요. 어제 세계가 독침을 맞았잖아요. 정치적 올바름에 지나치게 매몰되었다,라기 보다는 정치적 올바름의 대상이 아닌 것까지 그 대상인 것마냥 호도한다는 게 문제겠죠.
그리고 인간에게 많은 기대를 하지 않는 게 좋아요. 모든 인간이 다 공맹이 아니고 예수님이 아닙니다. 모두에게 선을 추구하라고 바랄 수 없어요. 위선이라도 떨게 놔두는 게 그나마 차선일 겁니다. 예의니 뭐니 다 무시하고 인종차별적 언행, 성차별적 언행을 대놓고 하는 것보다 나을 거에요.
