Competent Jerk: 일 업무에 대해서 뛰어나지만, 성질이 더러워서 함께 일하기 껄끄러운 사람 Lovable Fool: 일에 대해서 잘 모르지만 함께 있으면 즐거운 사람 Lovable Star: 스마트하며 함께 일하기도 좋은 사람 Incompetent Jerk: who? 어떤 이가 생각나시는가요? 일도 못하며 사회성도 없는 사람 조직에서는 업무를 모르고 사회성이 없는사람들은 뽑지 않을려고 노력해왔는데요. 회사나 조직의 규모가 작든 크든지 대부분의 사람들은 Lovable star 랑 일하기를 원하고 incompetent jerk를 싫어하는 것을 발견하는데요. 자 그렇다면 Competent jerk 와 Lovable fool 에서 선택하여야 한다면 어떻게 할까요? 대기업에서는 이렇게들 이야기합니다. 기술을 이해 못하는 바보에게는 업무를 연마시켜줄수가 없지만 일을 잘 아는 고집쟁이와는 함께 일을 할 수 있습니다. 만약 당신이 착하고 나이스하다면 그것은 보너스입니다라고 말하지만서도 실제로 리서치 조사를 했을때의 결과는 반대로 나왔습니다. 개인적인 감정들이 업무관련 사회적인 관계에서 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 발견하였는데요. 만약에 특정 상대에 대해서 비호감이라면 그 사람이 업무를 잘하고 효율적으로 하는가 못하는가는 거의 관련이 없다로 나온 결과입니다. 사람들은 업무능력이 좋아도 비호감인 사회성이 결여된 사람과는 함께 일을 하지 않겠다! 라는 결과랍니다. 그 배경에는 competent jerk 가 가지고 있는 지식과 스킬이 우리에게 필요하지만서도 그가 가지고 있는 스킬을 우리가 꺼내오기가 어렵다는 점이 문제가 된답니다. 그리고 지식들이 쓰일려면 대부분 배경설명을 추가로 요구해야 하거나 혹은 질문을 competent jerk 에게 하기 위해서 우리들은 나의 모르고 있는 점을 상대에게 알려야 하는데 그 상대에게 약점으로 작용한다는 우려를 가지게 마련이기 때문에 competent jerk 와 일을 하기를 꺼려한다는 점입니다. 반대로 lovable fool 의 경우는 그에게 이용된다는 우려감이 없이 그와 일을 할 수 있기 때문이랍니다. 소셜 사이언티스트들은 이야기합니다. 우리들은 자신과 비슷한 사람을 좋아하게된다구요. 이 점을 명시할 필요가 있습니다. 우리가 타인의 업무 능력/그들이 가진 자신감 보다 상대(직장동료)에 대한 나의 호감도가 업무에서 더 중요하게 작용한다는 것을요. 상대를 배려하고 착하고 친절하며 즐거운 사람들을 우리는 좋아한다구요. 사람들은 자신과 비슷한 성격, 관심도, 선호도를 가진 사람을 좋아한다구요. 그 이유는 그 사람들로부터 자신의 가치관이 맞다 혹은 좋다로 다시금 재인증을 받는 과정을 거치기때문이라고 사회과학은 이야기합니다. 결국 업무에서 비슷한 성향의 사람들은 협동을 더 잘하게 되어있고 일이 부드럽게 진행이됩니다. 당신과 비슷한 사람들에게서 당신은 기대치가 비슷하며 업무 진행시 불필요하게 에너지를 낭비할 필요가 없이 좀 더 관용적이 되기 때문이기도 합니다. 이러한 환경은 좀 더 신뢰가 있는 환경을 제공하여 오픈된 생각을 자유롭게 전할 수 있을 수 있습니다. 또한 이런 호감이 가는 사람에게는 정보를 묻기에도 편하며 서로 생각을 주고받기에도 쉽게됩니다. 한편 신체적으로 호감이 가는 사람과는 업무를 진행하기에 좀 더 즐거운 환경이 될런지도 모릅니다. 이렇게 비슷한 그룹의 사람들에게서 나타나는 가장 큰 단점은 스스로 가지고 있는 단점을 지나칠 확률이 많다는 점입니다. 다양한 이들이 많이 있는 그룹의 사람들은 상호작용으로 인해서 단점과 상대의 장점 등을 다르게 살펴볼 수 있습니다. 한편 비슷한 사람들의 그룹에서는 새로운 사람이 가지고 올 새로운 관점을 놓칠 수 있다는 점입니다. 또한 같은 경향의 사람들은 논쟁하거나 상대의 감정을 상하게하는 것을 피하려하는 경향이있을 수 있습니다. 가정 큰 단점은 우리와 비슷한 성향의 그들과 함께 시간을 보내기는 좋지만 단지 그들이 업무를 전혀 진행하지 않을 수도 있다는 점입니다. 따라서 일마치고 함께 맥주를 마시러가기에는 좋지만 계속해서 자신과 비슷한 성향의 사람만 고용한다면 결국 프로젝트나 회사가 망하게될 수도 있다는 점입니다. 따라서 중요한 것은 어떻게 우리가 균형을 이루어서 우리와 성향이 다른 사람과도 조화롭게 업무를 진행할 수 있는가가 포인트가 되겠지요. 명심할 것은 우리가 여기서 우리가 업무와 관련된 외부 사람들에 대해서 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내부의 동료들에 대한 이야기라는 점입니다. –HBR Volume 83, no. 6 2005년 6월 copyright (번역이 엉망이어서 조마조마..-_-;;) 옮기고 보니, 다 아는 이야기인데요. 그룹이나 조직에서 서로 비슷한 사람들끼리는 그래 좋은 것이 좋지 서로 얼굴 불키게 할 일 뭐가 있냐고 하여서 덮어두고 넘어가는 일이 발생하기도 하는 경우가 있는데요. 예전에 콜롬비아 우주왕복선 폭발사건에서 whistle blower 역할을 하는 이가 있었다면 하는 기사가 생각나기도 하는데요. 과연 여러분들이 몸담고 계시는 조직/회사/학교 등의 내부 사회적인 관계는 어떤가요? 수평적이며 서로 대화가 잘 전달되면서 한편으로는 whistle blower 역할을 내가 할 수 있는지 아니면 그런 역할을 하는 이가 있을까요? 얼마 전까지만 해도 제 주변에 성격 발랄하고 외향적인 동료들이 주변에 있어서 조용한 저도 대화에 끼게 되는 일이 간혹 있었고 제가 짬밥이 오래되다보니 저한테 질문도 많이 해서 제 사교성도 비교적 좋아 보였어요. 업무가 바뀐 지금은 저랑 똑같은 일을 하는 친구가 저 말고 두 명 더 있는데 이렇게 세 명 나란히 앉거든요. 나머지 둘은 대화도 많이 하고 잘 지내는데 저는 하루 종일 입도 뻥긋 안 해서 이래도 되나 싶어요 ㅠ. 제 옆에 앉은 이가 잘 생긴 백인청년인데 너무 곱상하게 생기니 너무너무 할 말이 없어요. 아무리 생각해도 이 잘 생긴 애가 일을 참 드럽게 안 하는 것 같아요. 잘 생기고 나이스한 걸로 살아남는 건지.. 좀 수상해요.
